Her cakes sell out every week; the bank still wants her husband's signature

I bake from home in Sargodha — custom cakes, around 40 orders a month, steady for three years. My business runs on a personal JazzCash account in my own name, which works until it doesn't: transaction limits cap my growth, I cannot issue receipts customers' offices will accept, wholesale suppliers want bank transfers, and when I tried opening a business account the branch asked for a shop rental agreement, an electricity bill of the 'premises', and — after everything else — whether my husband could co-sign for comfort. My premises is my kitchen. There are millions of us: catering, stitching, tuition, salon work, reselling. We are not micro anymore and not formal yet, and the products that fit us do not exist. A business account designed for home enterprises — digital onboarding, home address accepted as business address, no male guarantor theatrics, limits that grow with transaction history — would onboard a whole shadow economy. The first bank or fintech that does this properly gets three million customers by word of mouth alone.

A high-conviction problem with strong founder-market fit signals. The combination of severe price asymmetry, accessible demographics, and existing infrastructure makes this buildable within 9 months by a small team.

Partner pilot with one bank: home-business account with digital onboarding and no premises requirement

Nothing in SBP regulation requires a shop lease or a husband's signature — banks add these as 'comfort' by policy inertia. The unlock is one bank piloting a home-business account designed from the applicant's reality: digital onboarding with NADRA biometric verification, home address accepted as business address (courier verification, as banks already do for credit cards), income established from wallet and platform transaction history, limits that graduate with usage, and — decisive detail — a female-staffed onboarding channel because the discomfort in branches is half the wall. I spent six years watching women's loan files outperform men's on repayment; the business case writes itself. Through this platform I have now connected with two banks' inclusion teams — drafting the pilot proposal openly here and will report which bank moves first.

Until banks move: a shared 'business identity' layer on top of personal wallets

While the bank pilot brews, give us a bridge: a registration layer that issues home businesses a verified business profile — NTN facilitation, a printable/receipt identity customers and suppliers accept, and negotiated higher wallet limits against that verification (wallets can do enhanced-KYC tiers today). Even a recognized digital certificate saying 'Sundas Bakes, registered home enterprise, operating since 2023' changes supplier conversations. I would pay PKR 500 a month for that tomorrow, and every seller in my WhatsApp groups would follow.

Publish the rejection data: audit and rank banks on women's business account approvals

Banks respond to rankings the way students respond to grades. Mystery-shop every major bank with identical woman-owned home-business applications, document requirements demanded versus regulation, and publish the scorecard — which banks approved, in how many days, with what extras invented. SBP's own gender-finance push (Banking on Equality policy exists precisely for this) gives the ranking official relevance. My research group could run this credibly and would, with modest funding.

Instagram seller, 40k followers, and my 'business account' is a personal wallet at its limit ceiling. I have turned down two wholesale deals because I cannot receive proper transfers. The ceiling is not metaphorical.

The boutique got a business account only after my father co-signed as 'guarantor' for a business he has never entered. I keep the login. He keeps the legal standing. This is the standard arrangement and it is absurd.

Tutor: parents pay me across four apps and one shop-uncle intermediary. I cannot issue receipts schools accept for their records. The informality tax compounds at every interaction.

The Banking on Equality policy exists precisely for this and sits largely unimplemented at branch level. The gap between SBP circulars and branch behavior is where twelve million businesses live.

CSR angle: we fund women's entrepreneurship training constantly. Graduates complete the course and hit this exact wall. We are training people for a door that stays locked. Funding the lock-pick instead would be smarter money.

I resell clothes online quietly. My earnings sit in my brother's account because opening my own felt like applying for a visa. Reading this thread felt like being seen.

Your comment is why the pilot proposal exists. If the bank moves, accounts like yours are exactly the first thousand we onboard. Watch this space.

Toronto side: I tried to fund a cousin's home catering setup and there was literally no clean channel to capitalize an unregistered women's business. The diaspora wants to invest in exactly these enterprises.
